GATLIN, Carrie Ceceil (Jones)

Carrie Ceceil Jones Gatlin was born on Hobert, Delaware County, New York, October 11, 1843 and departed this life March 7, 1919. In 1854, she came west with her parents to Schuyler County, Missouri. In 1865 she was united in marriage to George A. Gatlin. To this union was born five children. Two, Bertha May and Etta Maude, died in infancy, years ago. Since that time Mrs. Gatlin has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Barbo, at whose home she passed away.

In 1886 she was converted and united with the Methodist Church and the same year she moved with her family to Lenora, Kansas and united with the Congregational Church. She has been a member of that church for twenty-two years, faithful to Christ and the Church unto the end of the journey.

She expressed herself as knowing that she could not be here long and declared she was ready to go and did not dread death, and when we find her favorite scripture is the 14th Chapter of John's Gospel we partially understand the source of her strength and faith. Her life was a benediction, always cheerful, always busy, always hopeful.

She leaves to mourn her loss, Mr. & Mrs. Barbo and family and Mr. and Mrs. Lukritz and family and numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services were conducted from the Congregational Church by Reverend W.E. Dull. The remains were laid to rest in the Lenora South Cemetery.

GODDARD, Janice L. (Born)

Janice L. Goddard was born 6 April 1930 to John B. and Gladys (Blazier) Born on the family's farmstead north of Morland, Kansas where she grew up learning the value of a hard day's work and the importance of faith in God and service to the community. She died peacefully, on 20 November, 2010 at the Graham County Hospital.

On 13 February 1949, Janice married her high school sweetheart, Bill Goddard, in Manhattan, Kansas. She once commented that all she ever wanted was to "marry that Goddard boy, live by the creek, and have lots of babies"...all of those wishes came true as she and Bill built a home by Young's Creek and filled it with four children.

Due to a hereditary condition, Janice began to lose her hearing in her early twenties and was totally deaf by the age of 35. She handled this loss as she did everything else in life - with grace, courage, and a wonderful sense of humor.

Janice was a lifelong member of the Morland United Methodist Church, serving faithfully as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School Coordinator, church treasurer, and officer of Ladies Aide. She shared her talents freely with her church family, gracing the tables at church dinners with her wonderful cooking and contributing numerous hand-made dolls, afghans and quilts to the annual Lord's Acre auction. She loved to sing and had many favorite hymns. The loss of her hearing meant the loss of her singing ability, but years later, when cochlear implants restored her ability to hear some sounds, she brought us all to tears by singing "The Old Rugged Cross" with the congregation. It was the most beautiful sound any of us had ever heard.

Janice's home was a place of refuge for everyone...a place where no one entered unwelcomed or left hungry! Her warm smile, welcoming spirit, and extraordinary sense of humor made everyone who entered feel like her best friend and made them want to stay. The memories created in her home and in her presence are an everlasting gift to all who knew her.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents, John and Gladys Born; her brother, Wilbur Born; her husband, Bill Goddard; and a son, Rick Goddard. She leaves to celebrate her life one son and his wife, two daughters and their husbands, one daughter-in-law, nine grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

In a conversation with a hearing specialist, Janice was asked the one thing she would most like to hear. Her reply was "I'd like to be able to hear the Christmas music." In honor of that wish, Christmas music was played at the close of her funeral because now, at long last, Janice is able to hear the sounds of Christmas.

Note: Burial was in Morland Cemetery.

GODDARD, Ricky Dean "Rick"

Ricky Dean Goddard came into this world 5 August 1949 in Norton, Norton County, Kansas to William "Bill" and Janice (Born) Goddard. He left these Kansas plains on 20 August 2007, according to his wishes, at his Lenora home surrounded by love.

He grew up in rural Graham County on the land homesteaded by his great grandparents, Enoch and Rebecca (King) Fox. On 5 August 2004, he married the former Jackie Smith at Cottonwood Ranch near Studley, Sheridan County, Kansas. He had been married twice previously.

He attended both Fort Hays Kansas State College and the University of Kansas. Rick spent the majority of his life farming. At various times he had lived in Hays, Lawrence, Wichita and Lucerne, Kansas as well as in Montana.

Rick spent much of his leisure time in carpentry, hunting, fishing and reading. Among his family, he was well-known for his prowess at Trivial Pursuit. After battling alcoholism for many years, Rick had achieved over 12 years of sobriety with the help of AA. He had changed his life by "working his own program" and became a hero to those who had witnessed his turnaround. He did not try to change those he loved nor to run anyone's life. Instead he chose to strive to accept the things he could not change, find the courage to change those he could and sought the wisdom to know the difference.

Since November 2005, Rick had been the custodian at the Lenora Grade School. He considered the students to be "his kids" and was proud of each of their successes. The superintendent commented anyone could clean a school, but it took someone special to capture the hearts of the children. He not only encouraged them to read but participated in their reading contest and also read "Green Eggs and Ham" to the students on Dr. Suess Day. During his illness, their cards and letters greatly cheered him. Rick shared a special rapport with his co-workers.

Rick's memory will be cherished by his wife, daughter, step-son, mother, brother, two sisters, seven nephews, three nieces and a grandniece.

GODDARD, William Amos "Bill"

William A. Goddard was born September 22, 1925 to Edward P. and Katie L. (Fox) Goddard on the Enoch and Rebecca Fox homestead north of Morland. He departed this life on August 10, 2005, as he had wished, in his own home.

His early years were spent along the banks of Youngs Creek, where he enjoyed fishing, hunting and horseback riding. Bill served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and then attended Kansas State University. He married his high school sweetheart, Janice Born, on February 13, 1949 in Manhattan, Kansas, and to this union four children were born: Rick, Ron, Rebecca and Sonya. Bill and Janice settled on the homestead north of Morland and began a life of farming and cattle ranching.

Bill was a lifelong member and faithful supporter of the Morland United Methodist Church. He was instrumental in the development of the cow/calf program for the church and served as co-chairman of the annual Lord's Acre Auction since its inception 42 years ago.

Bill's life was marked with a dedication not only to his church, marriage and family, but also to the community at large. He spent many years on the Graham County Fair Board, was a member of the Morland Lion's Club, served as president of the Kansas Hereford Association, and especially enjoyed working with area 4-H youth.

Bill is fondly remembered not only by his nine grandchildren and his nieces and nephews, but by many of their childhood friends who were always made to feel welcome in his home. They recall countless Sunday dinners, overnight slumber parties, backyard target practice, and bowls of ice cream. He was never too busy for a summer fishing trip or a winter-time toboggan ride and they all learned to play poker gathered around his coffee table. The stories of "Tork", his pet hawk, are legendary, and kept the kids sitting cross-legged and wide-eyed for many an afternoon.

Always a cowboy at heart, Bill never missed an opportunity to "teach" family members, visiting friends, or even casual acquaintances to ride a horse! The bruises resulting from those efforts have healed, but the memories will last forever.

He leaves to celebrate his life his wife, Janice; brother Laurel and his wife Mary; two sons, Rick and his wife Jackie, Ron and his wife Kathleen; two daughters, Becky and her husband Bob Ellis, Sonya and her husband Michael Cap; nine grandchildren: Josh Ellis and his wife Rachel, Ashley and Tadd Ellis, Lisa Williams, Jason, Jolee and Jacob Goddard, Bryce and Jessica Cap; many nieces and nephews and a host of other family and friends.

Note: Burial was in the Morland Cemetery.

This disease robbed hm of his vitality and the strength that he needed to combat other diseases. Poison got into his blood stream and caused his death, in spite of all that the doctors medical aid and the most tender care of his loved ones could do. He passed away Friday morning at 12:10 a. m.

He went forward and was converted during the revival meeting in the Christian Church at Hill city, Kansas in the Fall of 1927.

He leaves to mourn his death, his father and mother, two brothers, Harold and Laverne, two sisters, LaVauhn and Ila Jean. Wrestle a younger brother preceded him in death but a few months, having died of pneumonia on February 17, last.

The heart felt sympathy, of the entire community is with this heartbroken family over the loss of these two children in such a short time.
We loved him dearly
As only loved ones do,
But now he's gone to Heaven,
His days with us were few.
Jesus love to more than we
And called him home to Heaven,
Where peace, and joy, and comfort,
And eternal rest are given

When Clayton was an infant, he came with his parents to Sheridan Co., Kansas where his father homesteaded and where Clayton grew to manhood and received his early education.

Clayton, as he was known, farmed with his father and his early experiences read like those of other pioneers. He had inherited a courageous spirit and this enabled him to combat the trials and hardships of western Kansas in the early days when each sought house was a mansion and neighbors were several miles apart, but very close in spirit and friendship.

Clayton achieved mastery of his own life when young and naturally his entire life was characterized with the supreme confidence in the ultimate victory of justice and righteousness.

He loved the great outdoors and in early life he learned the essentials of being a farmer and was always active and alert in his efforts to achieve success and he knew how to apply himself to surmount the difficulties of being a prosperous; and industry as farmer.

Many of his most interesting experiences and some of his happiest days were living on the farm with his parents and two sisters.

Clayton was courteous and obliging and with his pleasing personality in beard himself to his friends and neighbors.

In a spring of 1917, he and his father auctioned off their farm and moved to Morland, Kansas where they purchased a rooming house, known as "The Gideon Inn". Clayton operated eight men's clothing store in Morland, but sold it when World War I began in 1919. He joined the United States Navy and served on the largest ship afloat, "The Leviathian" on which he made five trips across the Atlantic, four to France and one to England. He was in Liverpool, England when the armistice was signed.

After returning from the service, he built and operated a opera house in Morland for a number of years.

Clayton's mother passed away in 1929. His father died in 1941. After their passing, Clayton maintained the home at Morland for himself and two sisters. His oldest sister, Edna, passed away in 1957.

Clayton entered the hospital early in 1973 and after his dismissal moved to Dawson Place at Hill city for special care he is survived by his sister, Anna Smith, of the home in Morland.

HESKETT, Grace Olive (Hill)

Grace Olive Hill-Haskett [sic] was born near Bellville, Republic County, Kansas, February 29th, 1880. Died October 12, 1917 at Grygle, Minnesota, aged 37 years, 7 months and 13 days.

Grace, as she was known to her large circle of friends, moved with her parents to the farm near Morland in the year 1894. Here she spent the happy years of childhood, developing the many traits and virtues as she merged into sweet womanhood that endeared her to an ever-increasing circle of friends. The sunshine of her disposition will be long remembered by many, in the hours of mirth and social pleasure, in which she bore her part, and when the clouds of distress or suffering hovered low over any household that she could reach, she was sure to be there, offering socale and sympathy, and ministering to the suffering or stricken ones, as though their trouble were her own.

During her life she never united with any the church, but showed her faith and devotion to the Master by act and word and deed in the daily walks of life. Many times, during the protracted years of her suffering, death lingered near, and four times the surgeons knife sought to bring relief, and each time she calmly underwent the operation hoping to regain her health, a ready to meet of white winged messenger of death, and be borne to the home above, with no regrets, except, the leaving of sorrowing relatives and friends, to whom she did good night, until they meet in that home beyond the skies.the

In 1901 she was married to Charles Hasket [sic] and their pathway through life together for that brief period is dotted with many pleasant memories.

The many friends and neighbors extend their heartfelt sympathy to the grief stricken husband, mother, six brothers and three sisters and their hour of affliction.

The funeral services were conducted at the Morland Methodist Church, October 21, 1917, at 2 o'clock p. m., by Rev. I. L. McKean, assisted by M. A. Bachelor of Belleville, Kansas. A large concourse of friends and relatives observed the last sad rights when the remains were laid to rest in the Morland cemetery to wait the coming of the resurrection morning.

HOSTUTLER, Alvina
HOSTUTLER, Raymond

Mrs. Hostutler and Her Child Killed During Rainstorm Special to the Capital. Hill City, Kan., April 13-Owing to the very heavy rain which has been falling here since Monday noon, a sod house caved in upon the family of S. Hostutler of Pioneer township this county, without warning, killing Mrs. Hostutler and a child and breaking Mr. Hostutler's arm. One child escaped uninjured.

A few days ago Sellers Hostutler was playing with his two little children on a bed in his sod house near Hill City, Graham county, while Mrs. Hostutler was busy preparing breakfast. Suddenly one of the walls of the house gave way, letting the roof fall. At the first warning Mrs. Hostutler sprang for her baby, and both were killed together. Hostutler was pinned to the bed with the other child, but by almost superhuman exertion he managed to tear a hole in the dirt and timbers above him, through which he crawled and went for help, though his arm was broken and he was otherwise injured. The second child was taken out by neighbors with no injuries of a dangerous character.

Note: Burial was in Roscoe Cemetery.
